The international programme of residencies initiated by art3, focusing on research and production, supports artists hailing from the Rhône-Alpes region by giving them a chance to reside abroad (Germany, Canada, Spain, Italy) for a three-month period. Based on exchange and inter-regional cooperation, art3 takes in a foreign artist for the same period. The brief of these residencies is to encourage artists' mobility and to facilitate knowledge and relations with the artistic reality of each territory. art3 is based on a network of structures abroad involved in these exchanges, which pool their competence to accompany artists' research at home and abroad.

Invitations for candidacy are sent every year to artists who have done their studies in the Rhône-Alpes region, or who live in it. A jury of professionals is convened to examine the dossiers.
The professional organizations abroad with which art3 collaborates are: The French Institute in Stuttgart, Optica, a contemporary art centre, Montreal, Homesession, Barcelona, the Akademie Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart, and a.titolo, Turin.
art3 also proposes a residency addressed to critics, freelance curators, and curators attached to a venue in Rhône-Alpes. Every year a critic and/or curator has a chance to reside for two months at the Akademie Schloss Solitude, in order to carry on a research project in progress.
The art3 residency programme is backed by the Rhône-Alpes region, the Baden-Württemberg Ministerium für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kunst, the Ministry of International Relations in Quebec and the French Consulate General in Quebec, the Generalidad of Catalonia and the Barcelona City Hall, and the Piedmont Region.
